The most bat shit crazy thing about this? We're slaves to xcel. You can't get solar installed, have battery backups, and a fuel generator for emergencies AND remove yourself from the grid. You must stay connected to the grid and you must pay for that connection every month, even if and when xcel fails to provide you power from the grid. Even when xcel can choose to not uphold their end of the deal, you still can't terminate your relationship with them and disconnect from the grid. That is slavery. We are not customers. Customers can end their relationship with the company providing the good or service. Slaves have no choice. We have no choice.
